Providing data for the Common Database
The evaluation of passive imager cloud properties retrievals is part of the CREW. Hereto, a Common Database of cloud retrievals from different algorithms is build, which will be filled with retrievals of the different data providers. Below you will find relevant information for uploading your cloud retrievals to the common database. Note: the selected Golden Days are similar to those selected for CREW-2. Thus, providers that already have provided their data for CREW-2, and that do not want to update their datasets or add new ones, do not need to upload their datasets again.
DATASET SPECIFICATIONS
We have selected five Golden Days that are listed in Table 1. During several hours of the selected Golden Days the A-Train satellites where aligned with AVHRR on-board NOAA-18. Our evaluation study will focus on these hours. However, we encourage the participants that are providing datasets from SEVIRI and MODIS to upload their datasets for the full day (24 hrs). The study area is restricted to the SEVIRI full disk. The following data are desired for the Common Database:
- SEVIRI 15 minute data of the MSG disk preferably covering the golden days entirely (5x24hrs);
- MODIS swath data covering the MSG disk preferably covering the golden days entirely (5x24hrs);
- AVHRR swath data covering the MSG disk during the hours where NOAA-18 was aligned with the A-Train satellites
- Other instruments (MERIS/POLDER/..) preferably covering the golden days entirely (5x24hrs).
You can upload your data to the Common Database through the FTP site of ICARE, which is assessable for CREW members after registration, see Assessing the FTP server (below) for more details.
THE UPLOAD DEADLINE IS 26 MAY 2011.

Assessing the FTP server
A dedicated FTP server is available for CREW data exchange, in addition to all
other ressources available to ICARE users.
ftp://ftp.icare.univ-lille1.fr
Here you can upload your up abstract for CREW3 and your updated data,
as well as having access to CREW documents and announcements.
REGISTRATION
A dedicated FTP space is available to us on ICARE of the Lille University 1.
You can access results and upload data through the ftp site at:
ftp://ftp.icare.univ-lille1.fr
To be able to use the ftp, you have to register on ICARE through the following form:
http://www.icare.univ-lille1.fr/register/register.php
When asked for a short description of your project, specify simply
Account request for the Cloud Retrieval Evaluation Workshop (CREW)
Please take note, that the registration process may take several days.
Once registered, this will automagically make you a member of the
cwg (CREW Working Group)
and you will have ftp access to the following hidden directory:
ftp://ftp.icare.univ-lille1.fr:/DATA/FS117/crew
This dedicated 5To space is available to the group only, in addition to all
other ressources available to ICARE users.
This directory is hidden so it won't show up on 'ls' but you can directly
cd /DATA/FS117/crew
and will then see everything normally.
DATA ACCESS AND DELIVERY
Following folders are in the CREW working group folder:
- Level 1 products of the relevant dates
./crew/observations
see also Satellite Observations - Documents and reports of the CREW meeting
./crew/documents - An upload area for abstracts and data sets
./crew/upload/abstracts
./crew/upload/retrievals
Here only CREW participants have read and write access. - Cloud retrieval data
./crew/retrievals/
The cloud retrieval data sets of the participants are located here.
The CREW participants have read access. - Results
./crew/results/
Intercomparison and validation results will be here.
The CREW participants have read access.
